THE FARM

A GEORGIAN COURTYARD FARM

Craigs Farm Cottage is part of Craigs Farm. There is also a basement flat and a family house here.  Around the courtyard, there is an office, a large and small barn, not to forget the 8 sheds..!

The Cottage is the only apartment that is used for short-term letting. The owner, Colin, and his family live at Craigs Farm House part-time. You might also see your co-host and the Farm Manager, Ian, wandering around doing more of the never-ending maintenance work that this 200 year-old property demands.

There is evidence that this area of Dumfries - formerly called Over Craigs and Wolfgill - has been in use as farm land since the Iron Age. The farm was built as part of the Craigs House Estate around 1800. You can see the original grand Georgian style Craigs House up on the hill, on the opposite side of Craigs Road, about half a mile south-east of here.  This is used as a family home by our good neighbours.

The Cottage was originally built for the Farm Labourer and his family. The large barn once had an octagonal lean-to building, housing a mule or horse-race, a source of power for the farm machinery.  It is told that for some time this machinery milled oats, suitable for making porridge.

The garden is about 2 acres and extends down to Wolfgill Burn. This stream forms the boundary between Craigs Farm and The Crichton Estate. Look out for rabbits, squirrels, badgers, foxes and deer - they are all garden visitors. In the Springtime we have snowdrops, daffodils and crocuses.

At this point, you might be asking “Who’s Craig then..?

The “Craig” here is not referring to a person, but to the Scots dialect spelling of “Crag”.  Specifically, it refers to the 2 mile long rocky outcrop that runs through the fields near here, parallel to and south of Craigs Road. The Maiden Bower path goes over this Crag to the Chrichton.
